Lately i have been reading and strongly analizing everything related to RoM. I used to enjoy witches in previous games, but there's something that puts me off in Realm of magic... i don't know exactly what it is, i think that maybe the visual effects, that seem to colorfull and bright and a bit exagerated...
After reading and watching a lot of youtube videos i've realized that everyone mentions how the spells and potions are just stuff that already exists in the game...
Is this your experience with RoM? Aren't there any spells/powers/potions unique to the pack? And what do you think of the animations?
Yeah they kind of are, don't expect any "chased by bees" or "turned to hold" spells like previous installments. All of the spells are based on events and using animations already in the game.
I was going to let this go but... where are the recycled animations for casting spells from? That they all use the same animation is a valid criticism. That they're recycled ... gonna need your sources. (Previous Sims games don't count. new Rig, new Animations.)
Also... without using cheats... how do you get rid of a puddle without mopping? Or repair a stove that's been torched in a fire without spending simoleans? Or get food without prepping it/buying it from a stall? or, for that matter, unspoil spoiled food and improve poor quality food? Yes, they're cheats in the game, but no cheat code or mods to access dev cheats required. So again, I'm going to need more than "it's a cheat" to dismiss them as just recycled gameplay.
And then there's the Strangify spell... where's that recycled from? I don't remember finding it in the game before Realm of Magic came along.
As I said, I should let this go. But while there are valid criticisms of both Realm of Magic and of recycled content and animations in Sims 4, this is not one them.
@DaWaterRat I don't think you understand what I mean. Just because you can't do some things with cheats doesn't mean the animations aren't recycled. "repairing a broken thing" is a feature of the game that already exists but with RoM there's a flashy spell that comes with it. "Setting someone on fire" is something maybe you can't do with cheats, however it uses the same animation like when I sim is normally on fire.
In previous installments there were actually tons of spells that featured completely new animations and objects, like the bees from The Sims 2, or golden objects/sims from sims 3 etc.
These are just the ones from the top of my head right now.
Clearly we're talking about different things when we're talking about animations, then. Because to me, "animation" means the actual movements of the CG rig when I tell the sim to perform an action, not the result of the command I give the sim to perform.
So no, waving a wand at a broken thing and repairing it is not, to me, the same as a sim producing a screwdriver out of hammerspace and tinkering with an item until it's fixed. One takes 2 minutes, the other 10. One the sim has to be at the item to repair, the other - with the right perks - the spellcaster can be on the other side of a different floor of the house.
Same result, significantly different ways to get there. I'm sorry, that doesn't count as "recycled" to me.
I understand that the spells aren't repeats of what was before, and I do get that for some that's disappointing. But I really think people focus too much on the flashy "dangerous" spells (that admittedly aren't that dangerous) and not on the ones that are actually useful.
Edit - and while I'm thinking about it, that some of the spells duplicate things that are in the Scientist career is actually a kinda hollow argument, because it presumes that the player has Get to Work and has access to the Scientist Career (or Spa day and the Wellness skill for teleportation). New Simmers may not buy packs "in order" and not everyone chooses to get all the packs. So I really find the idea that there should only be one way to get to do certain things that comes with only one pack... rings a bit gatekeeper-ish.
