Starving Animals

I've upgraded my barns so the feed is always full but my cow and llama are always starving. I have no cc or mods.

When one of my hens is sitting on an egg she gets unhappy and starving. I call her out and feed her personally. I hesitated over that at first because I didn't want to damage the egg by having her leave it. But they seem to develop ok. I have six chickens and I always click the "feed" button two or three times so I'm sure they have lots of food around.

I do have something I haven't been able to figure out: how do you clean a chicken? Several times some of them have had the green fog of filth and complained that they were dirty, but I can't figure out how to get them clean. I've tried cleaning the coop and sending them inside, and I've tried interacting with them, even telling the 'preening' joke. They still are dirty for quite a while, and I haven't been able to figure out how they get clean. I am guessing it just affects them if they've been in a dirty coop for too long and it takes time to wear off.

Does anyone else have this happen with their chickens?

I should add, this doesn't bother me, none of the challenges I've found in this pack bother me, it's great!

Watch them they will preen themselves to clean up just like a real chicken.

Thank you, @TwilightDeb I had been a little concerned that I needed to do something for them. I don't watch them much since my poor sim is usually scampering around the garden working her fingers to the bone.
