Saw a 'tour the world' video a few minutes ago, and the world, while pretty, could easily be in California, perhaps some parts of Mexico or South America. There was nothing that clearly said 'Mediterranean'. This is the Sims, so if it takes a little bit of cliche to give the vibe, so be it.
