Tattoo in Mt. Komorebi and Tomarang?

In my head, I got this picture of tattooing being an old tradition in Asia, so in my game I plan to have a tattoo shop focus in the worlds of Mt Komorebi and Tomarang, that I play as the Empire of Snorthia. Is anyone else thinking along these lines?

My problem is that hardly any lot in Mt Komorebi is suited for the small business combo, so I will need to do some adjustments there. I will be happy with just one parlor in each world, but I also want to add some tattoo elements to other lots, just to make that old tradition feel more like a community thing. Hopefully there will be at least a few posters with tattoo designs, like we saw in the trailer.

I don't know much about this in real life, but if tattooing is respected as part of the culture, it would probably not be wrong to implement certain routines for the emperial family, too. Then I think I must find designs matching with what my "protected families" were gifted centuries ago, like the family protecting the dragon should have a dragon tattoo, the family protecting the silk worms could have a butterfly tattoo, etc. I did not see many typically dragon tattoos in the trailer, so I'm curious to find out if I can create my own by importing images etc.  A free hand in-CAS drawn dragon would probably not please the Emperor that much, LOL.

Because of this I also look into having a tattooing academy in Mt Komorebi, or a system of foreigners going there for a couple years to learn the art from working as trainees at tattoo businesses. Just need some more info before I decide...

Is anyone else m aking up cultural and/or traditional stuff regarding the tattoo business?

  • Tattoos are really frowned upon in Japan, to the point that one is refused entry to gyms and onsens if they have visible tattoos. They are associated with Yakuza. Highly unlikely that the emperor would get one. 😁

Oh my, thanks for the info, LOL :)

I did some research after posting, and it seems like tattoos have a long history in most parts of the ancient world. But as I'm not playing ancient game, and my picture was more based on the fact that seamen often got tattoos, and I had two uncles sailing a lot to Asia. Back then tattoo shops were probably  nomal in most harbors, perhaps more in a dark harbor quarter than on the main street. So, maybe it was a bit frowned upon not only in Japan? Being popular with a certain class, only? Today I no longer think of tattoo shops as something dirty, but rather something like an art studio, quite trendy in certain YA groups.

Well, hmmmm... I must do some more thinking, I'd like to locate a tatoo culture in my game, and I feel Nordhaven might be a trendy place for this art, more than he traditional place.

Growing up, tattoos were usually seen on sailors, truckers and convicts. Nowadays you can see them on just about anyone. Asians, for the most part, value white unblemished skin, but there are always subcultures where people will get them, like rockers, army, navy, gangs, etc. From what I've seen, traditionally tattoo culture is usually seen in warrior type tribal populations, and are not meant to be hidden and will adorn parts of the body that are uncovered.

I might just drop my idea of geographical origin in my game. The tribal thing could perhaps have been implemented with my Sulani back story, but it seems easier to just focus on the more mothern hipster-ish tattoo trend. No need to link every new feature to my sim nations' history, like I tend to do :)

I will use tattoos for some criminal clubs and members of a secret Ravenwood community, though. Hoping for a raven or feather motiv :)
