Yes, if you let go of the need to control your Sims every step of the way, the game really opens up. Once you experience that once, you want it to happen all the time and you start experimenting with being hands off more. The need to avoid disaster is still there, but even then you can indirectly influence your Sims by strategically placing emotion-changing objects throughout the house.
