33% don't say they have make moneys. And you are propably right, stuff pack good sells, but I'm sure it's too because the motor of TS4 is not strong like in the previous games.
But why shouldn't it be?
A company like EA who's main focus always has been marketing (the company even started as a publisher who only marketed games made by other game companies) doesn't make such decisions at random. The top of EA are marketing experts who may not know very much about making the games - but they know everything about selling and marketing the games. So I am sure that they work full time on investigating the market and considering how they can change the games such that they become more profitable - and the developers can only follow EA's orders.
The big Sims games have always been the best selling PC games ever. So even if sales numbers for TS4 should be a little lower than for TS2 and TS3 then TS4 still likely sell better than all EA's big action games, big war games and the many big sports games. So I am sure that TS4 is very profitable too.
The problem for us here though is that if sales numbers for TS4 should be a little lower than for TS3 then the marketing experts in EA's top are unlikely to make the correct conclusion and make TS5 more like TS3. Instead they will probably make the conclusion that time and people's interests change and that EA should find new types of games to focus on instead of using even more money on old games which don't sell as well as they did earlier.
Nah, I think EA mainly looks at technology and what is 'hot' at the time they consider a new IP. If it's pcs, o.k. they make more pc games, if's browser games they may buy up browser game producing companies. And it it's tablet and IOS tech that young people spend more time dropping hundreds on then they go that way. They have forever thought this is the market for the future (other than their console hot sellers/sports etc.) so I think they consider more of what is trending and cash cows and probably think pc gaming is just about almost dead when they see all the money made from Angry Birds or something like Candy Crush. It won't surprise me if they lean into virtual reality games once Google gets a huge market for that.
ETA: And it's clear they felt Youtube advertising thru players was a better route than the way we did get information so it's more about following the money rather than what any pc gamer believes or thinks or wants.
The top of EA are marketing experts and they know that just copying other game companies won't allow them to become even much bigger than they are now. So EA wants to make bestsellers for all platforms and also all types of games (in the beginning they only made sports games).
A few years ago EA began to buy stock in Ubisoft hoping to be able to buy the whole company. But after buying other companies instead they gave up on that plan. Now their main goal is to buy back a lot of their own stock (I think it was about $1.2 billion of stock) and of course they need a huge profit to be able to do that in only a couple of years ;)
There is no doubt that EA primarily plans to expand their number of mobile titles. But EA wants to be able to do that by expanding and not by cutting down on profitable titles for PCs and consoles. But if this still will be profitable in a few years only time can show :)
