I wonder if it's a performance thing with university. A level 5 fame sim being mobbed by fans is probably the craziest this game has gotten in my experience, in terms of number of sims doing stuff in one place and that can turn into a mess fast, with the celeb being spammed with fan interactions (though maybe that's intentional, so it feels like you're being mobbed). Anyway, my point being, even that isn't *that* many sims at once. You think about something like a classroom, suddenly you're looking at probably a minimum of 10 sims for it not to look weirdly small. Class becomes an absolute nightmare of performance as the professor stalls getting started, the students stand up to listen to the lecture instead of sitting, you try to interact with somebody during class and you both get out of your chairs to talk, your classroom is full of the same premade sims you see in every game. The kind of problems that have plagued this game for a long time.
I'm not defending it if that's the reason, just wondering if that's what it is with a thing like university. The played experience can get frustrating fast if the situation demands a lot of sims are involved. This game doesn't seem to handle that well. Even as many as 3 in the same space tend to try to interact with each other and get locked into it, instead of doing interesting things (unless they have highly specific, static roles or are temporarily diverted by bladder or something).
Of course, this take is colored by my experiences with the game. I know some don't find it as frustrating, or generally enjoy it a lot more.
