They should have done Star Wars like Into the Future.

In the spirit of Star Wars day, I'd like to talk about an observation I made when playing Sims 3 again.

It's not nothing to have both the Star Wars and Sims licenses, so I don't blame them for combining it. Should have been a full expansion though, and I feel like Into the future would be a pretty good benchmark for how to do it, with some deviations of course since you travel to a galaxy far away and not the future.

I'd make the planet in question Tatooine, and would give it three different versions, as into the future had too: Controlled by the Hutts, the rebel alliance, or the galactic empire.

They all have a base of operations, when not in control they retreat there and if in charge you see it's main characters walk the central area, which would then show their banners as well and their troopers would be seen patrolling around.
You can perform missions for each faction to help them gain control if they aren't in control, if they are in control you'd just get a different set of missions which can give nice rewards but don't change things.
Whoever is in control could allow some exclusive items linked to that faction to be in stores, on top of the mostly regular stuff that's always available.

There's a tough instant way to change who is in control too: Defeat the force user of the ruling faction in a lightsaber duel. Old Obi-Wan Kenobi for the Rebels, Darth Vader for the empire, and a random sim with a lightsaber for the Hutts.
Obi-Wan and Darth Vader can also be a mentor figure to your sim, you can spar with them if you have positive relations with their faction and they can give some tasks related to jedi/sith stuff with related rewards too.

On the rebel side you'd also have Mon Mothma and General Ackbar giving out missions as unique NPC's, and on the Imperial side it would be Grand Moff Tarkin and Director Krennic. For the Huts it could be Jabba, who'd be an "object" to interact with at his palace, or Bib Fortuna. Instead of a force user giving you missions, they'd have a bounty board, letting your sim be a bounty hunter.

Your sim can't kill of course, so all bounties are taken in alive but they'd have to find someone on tatooine and apprehend them, or use a space ship to fly away and do that task, using the familiar pop up adventure style where you need to make the right choices to succeed.
But sims would get to use a blaster pistol to arrest someone, and sims can quickdraw with these pistols too like a western duel. They'd shoot the blaster out of the other sim's hand if they win.
Some bounties would require the sim to do this quickdraw to take someone in. If they have a lightsaber they could also use that to deflect a blaster bolt and disarm the target that way.

But all the missions and faction stuff could also be ignored. You can own a house on tatooine, there could be moisture farms for sale. Also maybe some small apartments similar to where Anakin lived with his mother which could be the affordable starter homes.
And of course empty lots to build your own tatooine style houses with the new build tools. Tatooine's desert theme can also go handy with other regions that aren't star wars.

There would be new traits, force sensitive would be a trait, giving access to the force skill. Most you can learn by practice, but you could learn a few dark side and lightside powers only from Darth Vader or Obi-Wan. It could be a mission reward even.

Droid building would be a skill too, could just be the same as bot building but either way there would be a station to let you build star wars type droids. You could make protocol droids, could make your own C-3PO or similarly human shaped droids who can do household tasks and have their own personality chips.
You could also make an R2 or BB-88 type droids who can do other tasks that the protocol droid can't. They are great at repairing and hacking.

Marksmanship could also be a new skill, for blaster pistols. Could be stuff to use for target practice, and there's various blasters to buy.

Lightsaber combat could also be a separate skill, any sim can learn it but force sensitive sims learn it faster. Could be a bit like the martial arts skill of sims 3, and just like that used to beat other lightsaber duellists. Athletic skill could help with it too.
Red, blue and green lightsaber crystals could be readily available, but all others could be rare, making them special to find when you do or can be mission rewards. Some unique hilts could be rewards too.

For objects, everything needed for a full star wars home would be there. Kitchens, bathrooms, living rooms, basic electronics, doors of different sizes, windows too, computers, instruments, etc.
Mainly you'd get the imperial, tatooine and rebel alliance sets for this in style, but some stuff like instruments would just be one style.
It would pretty much be as expansive as Into the future with objects. Could even be unique star wars themed rockets to build, that lets your sim go on different star wars themed adventures, or travel to tatooine that way.
The regular way could be through an object similar to that time travel portal. Could be a hologram that lets you request a pick up by a shuttle.

For clothing, a lot of stuff seen worn by people in the original trilogy would be there, with colour swatches. Some extra stuff from the prequels and sequels too, like standard Jedi robes and Kylo Ren's outfit, Rey's outfits too. The actual ones, I can't believe how badly they messed that up with journey to Batuu, as well as how badly most star wars outfits look.
Would also be some hairstyles and hats, accessories too.

They could also add 3 Star Wars aliens as new Sim types for CAS, who could all be treated as aliens and have no disguise as the aliens already in the game or their powers. Each of them would however have their own male and female voice option, and not any of the regular options, all have some benefit from being on Tatooine and could have something unique about their particular race too.
Twi'leks could be a race for example. No hairstyles but they would have various decorations for their head tails and some different positions to carry them in which would be under their hairstyles category. They could be able to do a unique dance and being from a desert planet, could be immune to heat problems.
Zabraks seem a shoe in too, very popular. You can select their horns from a new tab, and it would be separate from hairstyles, they have all hairstyles available. The horns simply poke through the hair.
Having two hearts, Zabraks could tire slower than regular sims and could be immune to being scared to death.
I'm not sure about what third species would be best, something near human too.
On top of this, also cybernetic accesoires so your sim can look like a cyborg.

New objects included in the expansion that offer new interactions could be:
-Dejarik board. Would improve logic skill, kind of like chess but would show the figures moving.
-Holotransmitter. Could replace the phone if a sim has it, you'd see a little hologram when they speak with people or call someone.
-Meditation chair/cushion. Lets sims improve their force skill, but can also be used to improve the wellness skill to any sim.
-Bacta tank. Sick sims can be put in here to quickly get rid of any ailments they have.
-Holonet. A bigger holographic receiver, Sims can watch this for entertainment. View star maps and stuff like that. Kind of a luxury television.
-Jetpack. Similar to Into the future really. Helps complete a mandalorian look too if you want to go for that.
-Vibroswords. These more regular looking swords would allow sims to have sword fights without lightsabers too, the animations are already there anyway. Only the opening and ending animations would need to be different. And sims can put these up on their wall as decorations too.

  • I'm still very much on the boat that the Star Wars pack shouldn't have happened. They should have done a sci-fi pack that filled out Sixam more, kept it within the already established universe instead of the ad.
  • I can see you put a lot of thought into this and your ideas are not necessarily bad ones, but I am also in the Batuu-never-should-have-happened camp. A Sims scifi pack would have never gotten the same backlash and they would have had a lot more freedom to do more interesting things.

I definitely am in agreement with you on one thing: if they were going to do it at all, they should have done it well. All the restrictions on what you could and could not do at home versus Batuu and NPC interactibility prohibitions were an absolute shame. Not to mention the bugs. Batuu did not play well with other DLC, either. It was disappointing even beyond the scope.

I also say this as someone that had their Sims morale broken by this pack, eventually recovered to neutral over time, and was then convinced by a friend to buy it.

Batuu was an instance where it is a true shame that we cannot see the numbers on how well packs do, but I largely suspect an EP (even a good one) would have done them few favors.

All I know is I'd love to see a complete Sims-like game for Star Wars. I totally understand the criticism of gluing a small Star Wars pack onto the Sims, but just that little taste convinced me I want more.
  • any packs and expansions are always optional, there's plenty so anyone not into it can always skip it.
Personally I have zero interest in animals or the eco expansion.

I'm in agreement that Journey to Batuu gave us a little taste of what could be but wasn't enough. A completely separate spin off game like sims medieval was would probably be the best approach but well, if they are going to put a star wars expansion in the main sims series, they might as well do it properly or not at all.

I do really like how they handled the lightsabers and the dueling animations are pretty cool. I always did find it a shame that the only thing they did before was some collection of cheap looking star wars costumes for Halloween.

And now I fear with the poor reception of Journey to Batuu, they will never combine Sims and Star Wars again. It was such a stupid idea to make it one big advertisement for a real life theme park based on the sequel trilogy which is not that popular. They did not bring their A game.

And it really is the perfect thing for a spin off series, in a spin off series they could even have deaths like Sims medieval does. Heck I still wish they did a lot more with sims medieval instead of abandon it after one lazily made expansion that failed to provide anything highly requested.
Like horses, a different neighbourhood, new hero types, new skills or just increased customisation options for your Kingdom.

For a Star Wars spin off, I'd go with something a bit in between the main series and Sims medieval.
Like have some impactful quests that can change who is in charge and have these more active careers, but also have rabbithole jobs for regular folk. I would not even mind it if I can't build houses and that's handled like in Sims medieval, but I would want to see neighbourhoods of different planets.
  • Am not a Star Wars fan, but appreciate the thought and detail of the original post. IF the Sims was to have SW included, that would be the way to go. What they did and how they did it was a mess and a badly thought out one at that.
  • Very well thought out post. I don't have the JTB pack and I thought I remember the developers saying that Sims 4 would have new content not seen in the series before. This is why I never understood the backlash. Every pack is optional. Maybe if they added on to it with a pack refresh I will eventually get it. I am not sure.
  • True, every expansion won't be for everyone. I find most expansions for Sims 4 too boring. Anything interesting they do in game packs, never in the full expansion packs.
Which means the subjects in game packs are always just done poorly with too little content.

Sims 4 is a terrible game for those of us that like supernatural stuff, magic, futuristic stuff and all that. It does not even deliver half as much in that regard as Sims 1, 2 and 3 did.
Especially magic peaked with sims 1 and dove right off a cliff after that. The magic realm is so boring in sims 4 compared to Sims 1's magic neighbourhood.

I just think there's a lot of potential when using star wars. Heck, combined with the movie career, they could have added the ability to make a star wars movie. Show sims in star wars costumes go through a few scenes on set, including a lightsaber duel and all that.
Then again, the fame thing was also peaked in Sims 1.

I mean, by sims 4 they could have let us pick the costumes, let your sim pose for the movie in costume and that picture then appearing on bill boards. Maybe get to pick a few movie scenes there and have this movie made appear on television for your sims later. Like if it's a star wars movie, it could be on the action channel.
