I mostly only use the in game dating system to do the aspiration or when my sim is invited out sometimes they accept and the area is pre-chosen.
Otherwise though my sims have "dates" that aren't game structured. I do anything from invite them on vacation, to going to the beach to swim, they might go fishing or rollerskating or go to the karoke bar ect. Basically anything you can have sims do together eventually comes up as a date activity possibility, really it depends on my played sims interests.
