Could it be that his victim was caught in a cycle of opening and closing the umbrella?
Because that is something annoying I found occasionally, for example in holiday in he forest of Granite Falls.
Every few steps my sim would close his umbrella (dunno why, either because she had some rain cover by trees, or because she was too close toi a tree) then walk a few steps, open the umbrella again and so on.
