totally get this, I switch every once in a while but I try to avoid it as much as possible. So there's some tips to help with meeting other sims while staying in your home lot.
For example, it's good to chose neighborhood where there are some activities to do, like a BBQ, food stall, fishing etc. Usually your sims can interact with others there. Some of the neighborhoods in Oasis Spring and Willow Creek are good for that. The Spice Market in San Myshuno is one of the best for it.
If you have Get Together, you can create a club based on skills, traits or whatever and have them meet up at your home lot.
If your sims do have a job, socializing to meet work buddies and then inviting them over is also great option.
