I don't understand why people act like being grateful is ridiculous. I'm grateful that there are supermarkets that sell food, they're not doing it out of the goodness of their heart, they are a business trying to make money. Yet I'm still grateful that they provide a service that benefits me. It doesn't mean I need to like and buy everything they sell, or that I can't give them feedback on areas of improvement. There's nothing wrong with being grateful that this game exists and continues to be updated, it also doesn't mean the devs can't also be grateful for our continued support and custom. Gratitude doesn't need to be a one way street and demanding others be grateful for you is a bizarre attitude to have IMO.
Anyway on another note, while we're wondering why they went for the outdoor play area theme perhaps it's a point to remember they are limited to anything not being developed by other packs, there's always the possibility there's other packs being planned that will have a daycare for example.
As for the ball pit, it does look terrible and at first I thought they should have just gone with something else but in remembering the order they work in I realised they probably couldn't have turned it into anything else once they realised it wasn't working. The gameplay objects are the last thing they decide on so it couldn't become a pool as they wouldn't be able to provide swimwear at that stage. Perhaps a sandpit but the animations would have been different so it's possible the animations were already done before they realised how bad the ball pit looked. In which case the only other option would be to remove it. I'm not really sure whether they should have done that or not as it does reflect badly on them to have it in game but personally I would rather they left it in and I can just download a mod to make it look better if it bothers me.
