When I play with toddlers I kind of assume I have to take care of them as the main sim or the one being controlled. I have them click on the nanny or butler and ask for things also like food or help with training or playing with something. I don't play with them often but when I do no one is starving and they are advancing pretty well.
I don't use high chairs though unless I watch them like a hawk.
I play with autonomy off for the sim I'm controlling but on for everyone else in the household. I have one household where I'm bringing up an evil little one and a good one.. it's interesting..
