Thanks for the heads up. I will make sure to get the right kind of 'taart'. The suggestion to use 'vlaai' however doesn't sit right either because 'vlaai' is always sweet while English pie doesn't have to be. Today my sim had the option to make pumpkin pie (pompoentaart) and that can't be translated as vlaai.
It is an annoying translation issue, just like the bosbes which I already knew about.
That is the difficulty with translating. Due to cultural differences it is impossible to get it 100% correct for all the situations, since it might not really exist in that other culture, or have a slightly different definition.
The meat pie, for example is translated as "vlees pastei". Which seems correct to me. But the pumpkin pie is quit difficult. By the looks of it, I wouldn't call it a "pastei" either. I don't know what they made of it in the frensh translation, but it doesn't seem to be a "quiche" either. I am not even sure if a quiche could be sweet. At least, the one in the sims should taste sweet in my head.
I understand that "pompoen vlaai" also doesn't sound 100% right, because a "vlaai" is actually very Limburgs, whereas pumpkins really originate fron North America. Therefore I would picture myself also different things (mainly fillings) when you say "vlaai". But when you say "taart" I imagine myself some things that look even further off from the icon that is used for the pumpkin pie in the sims (something more like the chocolate cake). However when you Google pictures of "pompoen vlaai" and "pompoen taart" you get similar pictures aka, what looks like the pumpkin pie.
Good thing is, there is only one pumpkin pie, so however they decide to translate it, you will always cook the right thing when a NPC sim asks for it. It might, however not be clear that you can enter it for the pie competition.
But considering that the list with things you can cook gets really long, maybe the developers should contemplate on a filter, so you can search faster (like soups, salads etc)? Or a "bake for the pie competition" interaction so you see only the items that are allowed to enter? It would definitely make life easier when you play on a console.
