Upgrading an older PC?

You need more RAM, everything else looks fine. You didn't say how old the pc is, but if it's 5 years old or older, I would definitely scan the hard drive with something like Seatools

I think you could really use a new graphics card too. 2GB is quite low these days. Here is a ranked list:

You will find your current card on the legacy list, so it is no longer being supported. You’ll want a new one closer to the top of the current (non-legacy) list.

Actually, the CPU is from 2012, so it’s getting pretty old too.

I'd upgrade the videocard, but I'd first upgrade the HD to an SSD. 8GB of RAM is plenty. If you want faster RAM, you should probably just upgrade your entire computer. You could probably get a midrange gaming PC for not a whole lot.

What is your particular power supply?

Your PC is showing its age, so I recommend purchasing a new one, as it isn't really worth upgrading your current PC in my opinion.

I personally recommend that you get yourself a new PC if possible; I can configure you a custom link via CyberPowerPC or select the best parts within your budget via PCPartPicker (if building one yourself).

I would start with more RAM, but I like running a lot of things on my PC so I need a lot of ram, if that does not work, buy a more powerful GPU and if that does not work, consider buying a new CPU, however if you go that far, consider how much it would cost to buy a new motherboard with a newer cpu.

I would greatly appreciate a custom build from Cyberpower if its not too much trouble. I'm not even opposed to a custom build I just don't know how. I've only ever done upgrading. I really don't have the money for a completely new PC right now. I can't find the PSU but I'm guessing around 450W as that's what is common for this PC.

I don't really play anything else on this computer other than the sims game and streaming movies and tv. I have another computer that I can play the more high end games on if I want to, but I spend most of my time in the living room taking care of my toddler. So in what little down time I might get I will play on it. This PC is in the living room as the other one is a shared PC between me and my husband and he spends his days off on it so I mostly play on this one.

I am currently trying the Decades Challenge so I put a lot of CC in the game. I didn't have any issues or lag in my game until I added CC to it. I know this is a performance issue because everything else on the PC runs fine. I don't want to put a lot of money in it because it is an old PC and I will eventually get a newer one, just want to upgrade a couple parts to keep my game from lagging more than what it is. The lag isn't bad enough that it hinders gameplay just more of an annoyance so I don't mind upgrading the Graphics or adding DDR to it. If upgrading the power supply is a better option than I will do that. I just don't know which one to do to keep my game performance from lagging.

Any suggestions that can lead me to the right direction, other than buy a new PC, would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your responses this has been a bit educational on my part as I didn't even think to look at the PSU.

@Colton147147 Ok Wow... that was a bit of work to get the power board out. But its 500W. Which is better than I thought it was.

On my older computer, I added enough RAM to equal 16GB, and a decent (cheaper, as in less than $100) graphics card and my game ran both Second Life and TS4 on ultra perfectly.

The best I can recommend is a new GPU and RAM.

Without breaking the budget, I recommend the GTX 1650 Super as it is the only thing that can suit a 500W PSU.

As your CPU is quite old, your options are a bit limited to what you can upgrade.

If possible, I would also recommend upgrading to a better power supply - better for future capability (barring your ancient CPU/motherboard, which will need to be upgraded eventually).

I definitely recommend trying the RAM first--it's cheap, so if it doesn't help, you're not out much money. I think you will notice the difference though. I run 12 GB, and if I'm in task manager with the game running in the background, I'm usually never over 60%
