I had the same problem. I got round it by getting my vampire Sims to hibernate in the coffin for the 20 days. My game did cut off to the dashboard when I was 5 days in but when I reloaded it hadn't restarted the days so I removed my human sim and kept the game on fast forward only waking to pay bills. I also removed my doors to stop my human sim from slowing down the speed so I only had to keep speeding it back up when there was a phone call or post. I hope this helps someone.
