I've always liked spellcasters/witches/wizards/whatever over vampires. Shows (more specifically TVD & True Blood), games, you name it.. If it has both vampires & witches coexisting, I'll prefer witches more. And that applies to TS4 too, regardless of the fact that EA did them wrong.
If you ask me, I think they're more fun to play as than vampires, but that could just be me being biased.
