For me it varies. All of my kitchens are open to the living/family room so I also have to consider what is on the walls in adjoining rooms.
Sometimes I'll use full tiles and sometimes half tiles.
Sometimes paint if the adjoining room has a patterned wall.
simgirl1010 Thanks for the nice examples. I rarely use tiles that go up all to the ceiling because I feel it looks weird above the cabinets but your example of a tile kitchen looks nice. It has a bit of a retro vibe. I like to finally see an example where the tiles rug makes sense. I haven't found a place to use it yet.
