Way to reliably craft low quality Handiness furniture ?

The "broken" furniture you can make with the Handiness skill is quirky and quite charming in the right house (the normal furniture is in buy mode and frankly, a little ugly) but my sim refuses to make them.
I managed to get 3 chairs and 1 barstool, but even with all possible negative moods she will only make the normal side table. The more skilled she is, the less chance I have to get this elusive item. And I still want the plumbing after that.
Is there a trick ?
If she becomes uncomfortable while crafting can she badly finish the item ? (And why can't we do things with an uncomfortable sim, soldier on, trooper)
Her traits should have no influence, she's squeamish family-oriented and childish.
Yeah I know I can get them in debug mode but this is a no cheat save & there should be an easier way to do it yourself in any case.
