Weird design choices in The Sims 4
I'm trying to wrap my head around some of them, and they just seem so...Odd.
If we take, for example, ocean swimming & beaches. It's long been requested that we would be able to swim in oceans & rivers in places like Windenburg & Brindleton Bay, but it's probably never going to happen, because it's so laborous to do. Why? Well the answer might shock you ;)!
Thing is, the oceans and rivers in TS4 are built like legos. They consists of many, many individual pieces that are fit together and all sort of shapes and sizes & depths. This would mean editing the code and animations for each individual piece in order to enable swimming in them. Thing with this is, surely they must've know that we would want to swim in the ocean, so why did they not prep the oceans for it -while- they were creating them? I'm sure all future worlds where there are big bodies of water we will be able to swim in, but it seems like such a silly oversight to not include the parameters for this stuff in the first place, even if it wasn't implemented yet. I mean, we had references to horses in the code years ago, and who knows when if ever we are getting those, so why this massive oversight?
We can compare it to TS3, where instead of having shaped oceans, there was an ocean layer underneath every world, and terrain height would determine the shape of the ocean. It didn't look as great as the beaches in TS4, but it was functional. They didn't need to add anything new to the code to any other worlds after seasons unlocked ocean swimming for all. It would just be there, by default, if there was an ocean.
Another is the multitasking. Why must our sims multitask while doing everything, when most of us would much prefer if certain actions would be focused on only doing it. Take any skill building for example. Chatting while playing games is one thing, but chatting while painting? While writing a book? I don't think there exists a person who could do that, and still make any progress on a painting/book. As an artist I cannot hold conversations while painting. Those are things that require high levels of focus.
Chatting also slows down progress, which is realistic, but it slows it down far too much. It's gotten to the point that I will just cancel talking no matter what my sim is doing, because I just want my sim to do what I told them to do, and not talk with every sim in 5 mile radius. So in the end my sims will almost never end up multitasking.
What are the design choices in the game that you find odd/annoying? :|
EDIT:
I meant to post this to feedback, why can't I change the location afterwards? Another weird design choice!
