Weird design choices in The Sims 4

I'm trying to wrap my head around some of them, and they just seem so...Odd.

If we take, for example, ocean swimming & beaches. It's long been requested that we would be able to swim in oceans & rivers in places like Windenburg & Brindleton Bay, but it's probably never going to happen, because it's so laborous to do. Why? Well the answer might shock you ;)!

Thing is, the oceans and rivers in TS4 are built like legos. They consists of many, many individual pieces that are fit together and all sort of shapes and sizes & depths. This would mean editing the code and animations for each individual piece in order to enable swimming in them. Thing with this is, surely they must've know that we would want to swim in the ocean, so why did they not prep the oceans for it -while- they were creating them? I'm sure all future worlds where there are big bodies of water we will be able to swim in, but it seems like such a silly oversight to not include the parameters for this stuff in the first place, even if it wasn't implemented yet. I mean, we had references to horses in the code years ago, and who knows when if ever we are getting those, so why this massive oversight?

We can compare it to TS3, where instead of having shaped oceans, there was an ocean layer underneath every world, and terrain height would determine the shape of the ocean. It didn't look as great as the beaches in TS4, but it was functional. They didn't need to add anything new to the code to any other worlds after seasons unlocked ocean swimming for all. It would just be there, by default, if there was an ocean.

Another is the multitasking. Why must our sims multitask while doing everything, when most of us would much prefer if certain actions would be focused on only doing it. Take any skill building for example. Chatting while playing games is one thing, but chatting while painting? While writing a book? I don't think there exists a person who could do that, and still make any progress on a painting/book. As an artist I cannot hold conversations while painting. Those are things that require high levels of focus.

Chatting also slows down progress, which is realistic, but it slows it down far too much. It's gotten to the point that I will just cancel talking no matter what my sim is doing, because I just want my sim to do what I told them to do, and not talk with every sim in 5 mile radius. So in the end my sims will almost never end up multitasking.

What are the design choices in the game that you find odd/annoying? :|

EDIT:
I meant to post this to feedback, why can't I change the location afterwards? Another weird design choice!
  • The cellphone as a non-toggle aspect of the game is a Choice. I don't like it. I don't want it. And by that, I mean having Sims have cellphones is fine, but making it so every Sim gets one and this cannot be turned off is what I don't like.

Having no option for homeschooling. Another Choice.

Also, introducing terrain tools, but Build/Buy objects can only be placed on flat terrain. Or having so many clutter items that can't be placed on many shelves or that take up a whole countertop.
  • ts4 was originally designed to be an online game so of course it has lots of incongruences or weird aspects, which is what annoys me, ea should've think twice before deciding on a project and then changing idea at the later stages thus reusing the whole thing to make the traditional Sims game.
  • Endless generation of randomized sims
and no toggle to turn it off.

its very much ruining every single thing in the game for me since release

if it is about npcs they should just give player the ability to assign all npcs themselves in manage worlds which would really fix about any npc issue ever

(+yes it would just be very fun to create your own set of npcs tbh)

(and yes to comfort people who dont care there could be randomize sim button

and yes you could probably choose each world separately if say you wanted it so vlad is only entertainer in forgotten hollow or whatever)
    Spoiler

    the walkbys, customers...
should prioritize sims living in the world lot is in

but could also use sims from other worlds if no sims live there

(maybe you could even toggle in manage worlds what world residents are allowed to autonomously walk by there)

    again,
    no need for randomized sims.

for vet etc if there isnt animals in any households there would not be customers

but the animal households would visit until game runs out of those and tells you there is no more customers for the day

and yes aside from all these things you could still have option to "allow/disallow randomly generated sims" which would give you OPTION to add randomized households spawning in your game but they wouldn't run over your other sims the way they are doing now because you could assign the npc positions, you could control the walkbys and game wouldnt desperately spam randomized sims for these positions

oh and also randomized sims shouldn't become top celebrities by themselves for no reason

cause whats the point of being celeb anyway if its that easy to randomly spawn one

and yes i would like to stop game spawning endless vampires/occults

i have my own thanks. i dont need the snowgoggle beach wear tribe of them

and as for the strays it would obviously be animals in households with no human sim and maybe you could choose if game generates those or not too

oh and also just lack of toggles in general is very annoying

like why there isnt options for anything

//ok sorry a rant but really though i dont understand why they cant let us choose about these things

same with the phone thing above absolutely agree it should be option and not forced upon your sim

at very least give us real mute phone option so we dont get any of the invites or calls when we turn that on
  • They probably wanted to reserve ocean swimming for Island Living, to generate more sales.
One thing I don't understand is why there are so many weird swatches on so many things. If only we had Create a Style.
Also, why is all the expensive furniture straight from Victorian England? All gilds and curlicues...ugh.

    cause its pretty.

and also cause many people associate that type of furniture with old rich people mansions

and surely that type of furniture is not mass produced irl too so it would come pretty dang expensive to get that type of furniture in mint condition

now yes one could argue thats not the only type of furniture that should be expensive

but also like there is just certain elegance to victorian lounger vs ikea 2 seater even if they were sold at same price point realisically by some hooligans probably

as to why victorian england theme itself though? and not some other country other era?

    blame goth family.
I'm quite sure most expensive base game items in the game were made with their house in mind from the start and its still mostly base game for the most expensive stuff cause they did not introduce more expensive stuff in packs

Yes, weird swatches are weird. Like most bed sheets that come in dirt resistant colours. What happened to plain white sheets? And speaking of expensive furniture, yes, please give us modern designer furniture made of solid wood and expensive fabrics.
  • I find it annoying how a couple on a date will quickly be involved with group chats with strangers. The game seems to see two sims chatting on a community lot as a direct invitation to anyone to join in. When you go on a date this feels very strange, especially when your two sims are busy flirting.

This is also annoying at restaurants, where strangers might sit at your table to chat. It might have been improved, but it was like that in the past. I did not check very recently.
