Here's what it looks like if you use the tab mode camera and go inside, looking back toward the entrance. It appears to me as if they began to build it for just such a purpose, but abandoned the project.

Y'know, I've tabbed into that little inlet before, and wondered if they hadn't intended for it to be an alternative entrance, myself. My headcanon was that it had a cave-in and was left inaccessible.
