What Are Vampires Supposed To Do

While reading posts where people say Vampire actions aren’t working right, I’m thinking maybe I’ve seen these things and didn’t recognize them as problems.

So if I’m playing a non-vampire family, just what kind of interactions should I see with vampires?

Vlad greeted my family via a pop up notice but there was no ‘first bite’. Was he supposed to bite someone autonomously? I haven’t seen any vamp do that on their own, except once after my hunter started making an enemy of Vlad.

A vampire knocked on the door of another family and came on in on her own - despite the garlic wreaths, etc. I had up. She seemed a little irritated (hissed, thought bubbles) when she was near them.

SEVERAL vamps visited another household ( I had my sim invite them in) and socialized despite the TONS of garlic products I had all over the house. One began levitating and there was dark smoke but she abruptly stopped that and left. Caleb kept on playing chess while sitting beneath a garlic braid (he had a lot of thought bubbles about it).
Edited to add: this sim is my vampire hunter and he drank the resistance cocktail before he let them in

Oh yeah, and my designated vamp hunter cured Vlad and I read, to my horror, that there is no replacement. So now the sims I plan to turn won’t have a mentor. I did start a new save, copy the original Vlad to my library, but is it safe to move him into the save I play? (After deleting the cured Vlad).

And what are the chances the baby if a normal sim and a vamp will be a vampire? Random? 50/50?

When you get the phone call, Vlad is supposed to come and break into your sim's house.
Vampires who come knocking the door at night seem like they're checking if sims are asleep. If they are, they'll break in, make a sim wake up and drink deeply from them. The garlic will remove the ability for vampires to bite sims.
When Vlad is gone, dead or cured, you cannot replace him even with another Vlad. When sim is turning into a vampire, Vlad will text them saying that "he is sencing that the sim is turning into a vampire". When playing with a vampire for the first time in the save, Vlad will text them and explain the vampire life to them. Sims can either say OK or ask him to stop texting. The only thing these texts do in the game is increasing vampire's Vampire Lore skill (which I assume your sim has (garlic braids, potions and cure) so I won't explan it here) and that's it. If sim turns into a vampire, the vampire who turned them will be their master (to them, they are vampire's offspring). That vampire can offer the vampire advice to their offspring and vampires can ask biting advice from their masters. Any vampires can mentor other vampires whose rank is lower than theirs.

Now I'll explain about having a baby with a vampire.
If both parent are vampires, the baby will be a vampire.
If one of the parents is a vampire, there's 50% chance that the baby will be a vampire.
If none of the parents is a vampire, the baby won't be a vampire. But...
If one of the lot traits is On The Dark Ley Line (comes with Vampires game pack), then the baby can be born as a vampire no matter if one or none of the parents are vampires. I have had 2 normal sims have a vampire baby with this lot trait.
    Spoiler
If a normal sim and vampire have a baby, the baby has 50% of being a vampire and 50% of being an normal sim. If the lot has On The Dark Let Line lot trait, the baby will be a vampire.

Vampire abilities kick in when they become a teen. Before that, they don't have to fear the sun and have the same needs as sims have. Vampires stop aging once they become young adults (not even birthday cakes can age them up).

NPC vampires will automatically bite a sim when they are thirsty, very angry, or breaking in.
  • @EgonVM Thanks for this!

The only real problem I see is that Vlad didn’t break in after that first greeting. But since he greeted my sim a while ago, I don’t remember what was going on at the time. I was playing families for one week (game time) so I could have switched to another family, not knowing Vlad could have come in. Or saved and exited. Or it could have been a glitch.

It sometimes happens and sometimes doesn't. Nothing serious happens when he doesn't come. Let it just pass by.
I am also a rotational player but I switch the household whenever I like. From my observations, Vlad texts new households after 3 days. He may come at the same day or next. Fast forwarding may disturb vampires who want to break in (I think...).
  • If there's garlic on the lot, it simply stops them from being able to bite anyone for a while. They would get a very uncomfortable moodlet. Not sure if it would directly cause them to leave, but at least your sims are safe.
