I usually test new things on a family I will just delete after knowing it works in game before using my precious sims that means a lot to me. But it looks like you are on to it, being able to rollback and so on, I am not quite sure how to do that, what I do during challenges is keep a copy of my saves folder on my desktop and replace it with a new save after each gameplay so that if things go wrong I replace the save folder with the last saved one on my desktop, although your way sounds much easier :)
