I loved playing with famous sims in older versions of the game. I don't remember it in TS2 but definitely TS1 and TS3.
I agree that if they want they can make pre-mades who are loosely based on real celebrities without being specifically identifying. It seems like they have already been doing that in TS4. For example, Maaike Haas could probably be Lena Dunham if someone wanted and Ulrike Faust could be a spacey roommate of hers. I chose not to play that household in that way but it was obvious that it was set up for that if someone wanted. Likewise, the Partihaus was clearly able to be a Real World/Jersey Shore if someone wanted. Eva Capricciosa could be Snooki if someone wanted. (I didn't so again, I didn't play the house that way). Sofia Bjergsen was probably set up so that she could become a Swedish popstar like Zara Larsson. Again, I chose not to go in that direction but the choice was there for someone who wanted it.
I would prefer having Sims-specific pre-mades that could be loosely inspired by celebrities, perhaps even as a mix of several. I'll then want to make my own celebrities in the game through a celebrity system. I'm ok with having a few "celebrities" exist with the pack to start things off. I agree that the gallery means that people will have more options if they want specific celebrities.
We also already have a few skills and social media fame in the game to incorporate into a fame pack. Whatever they do, yeah, they should stay away from something like the Katy Perry era. I'll admit that I basically lost interest and quit the game for years because of that.
They should make it a flexible system so that you can have different kinds of celebrities. Just as you can play with different concepts of vampires, so they should make it for celebrities. We already have some concepts in the game that will help (exclusive clubs, vintage glamour, social media, snobbery, butlers, singing, spas). We need more skills such as acting, bands, film sets, maybe more fashion/models, a path for fame, reputations, paparazzi, vacations that are more glamorous than camping, and probably more romance. I miss the pretentious Shakespearean bookshelf for drama. That's just to name a few things.
