It's a more than OK for me, now that I have tried it. But it is still true that University is the pack I need most for where my favorite sims are in their lives. That save is still on hold as I experiment with Get Famous.
I will enjoy my old save more once I am familiar with how everything works and how I can apply it to that save.
The only downside for me is no beachfront neighborhood and not enough residential lots.
