I was looking up their surname and it seems to be from India, anyone have insight on this?

I wasn't sure because I've read a few times on how g/ypsy is considered a slur (but I don't know if it's dependent on context or not. And since I'm not of that descent, I ain't going to comment/use it lol!) But I did read a few times of them being of Romani heritage.
