What ever happened here?

Genetics in this game are ... weird.
I played a legacy for 3 generations and one of the progenitors - the woman - had very small eyes because I didn't want them to be "pretty".
They had 6 or 7 children(I don't even remember) and ALL of them had very SIMilar features. Small eyes and the same nose on all of them! I played some more with this legacy and again, every child born from the heir had similar looks. The same small eyes got passed over and over.
I even got identical TWINS!

The one thing that fixed the issue was a sibling of the heir marrying a townie and some of his kids actually got some looks from said townie.
I sort of got bored with playing the legacy and started a new household in the same save.
It's a sim that had children with 3 different townies.
First daughter was with an offspring of my legacy and ended up looking decent taking both looks from her parents!
The second daughter was with Caleb Vatore. And we all know Caleb!
For reference: Mom's in the middle, the first daughter in on the left, Caleb on the right.

Their kid was supposed to look decent also, right?

Yikes!
Not sure where those eyes and mouth came from! None of them have those features!
At least with my legacy features got passed over and over and none of these sims are related to my legacy! And this girl is definitely Caleb's since she's also a vampire!
Somewhat it seems like some genetics from my legacy got mixed in. o_O
These are 2 sisters from my legacy that she has a striking similarity to:

What's ...going on?! Are the genetics in this game broken?

  • Genetics might have been more obvious in previous series of the game, but I normally find similarities and a certain variation, so I think there is some correct calculations and not just random. I have my own on-the-side DNA-string which also might help, but basically I will find that facial features is often passed down, but with occasional surprises avoiding that all grows up looking almost the same.

I also noticed that the eye-, hair- and skin color passed down is either one of the parents' OR the offspring gets the next alternative (left or right in CAS). So, in one family both parents had pale blue eyes, and one child got grey eyes because that is listed next to the pale blue option. The grey might again lead to green. Parents with brown hair might get a child with brown-to-red hair, because that version is next to brown in CAS catalog. Same with skin, child can get a version slightly darker or lighter than parents. I like this, although I think nothing will ever beat the genetics of TS2. I miss the possibility for a child to inherit a surprise genetic from a grandparent. In TS2 each genetic contained a double set (like in RL), but in TS4 it seems each has just the option that is actually visual, nothing hidden = no surprises. In TS2 a brown haired sim would pass on brown hair regardless of what color her hair was at birth. In TS4 the game sees dyed hair color as true genetic...

No matter facial structures, often the hairstyle, make up and clothes style are needed to make sims look diverse, anyway. I often add a shocking big nose or ugly eyes etc just to get more obvious genetics.
