What happened to gameplay kits?

I'm willing to give gameplay kits another shot. I think they would work well for something like a small appliance, and maybe some hobby additions, like a handheld telescope. I think it would be very useful way to get things that would function off the grid. Maybe they could add some paper and a quill, or a typewriter. That doesn't seem like it would impact a lot of coding areas.
