What is the point of a sack lunch - if any at all?

I sent my teen Sim to school with the first ever sacked lunch I have ever prepared - ever. He didn't eat it - he has a spoiled sack lunch in his inventory. I only notice it when I told him to do...

my sims are about as good at time management as i am, so packed lunches are essential

a sim won't eat their packed lunch if it goes off before they enter the rabbit hole, but that's to be expected. my sims always eat their lunch at school/work regardless if their hunger bar is yellow or red.
