There is shockingly little gameplay in TS4. With mods, it's a fun dollhouse for someone who enjoys telling stories (because you certainly shouldn't expect things to happen independently, except for utterly illogical chaos created by a fundamentally flawed and bafflingly weak game engine) - but only when it actually works. These days, I feel I spend more time trying to make the game work, and maintain mods that I consider essential, than actually enjoying the game. TS4 has no competition, but I'm starting to feel rather done at this point. Right now, my game is such time-skipping chaos that I just killed all my sims and quit.
As for it being so expensive you could buy a PC that could perfectly run TS4? I have a custom-built gaming PC that can run Star Citizen - and TS4 still struggles. The engine is so weak it can't even make use of half my computer's power.
