What issues make you too scared to play with the main save?

We know that the main game and every patch usually include something risking your save or even your game. It's a serious issue if it happens in our main or long-played save.

I am the one who started to use mod "to disable unwanted features", and had to need more mods after every patch and pack arrived.

So, I want to share my thoughts and hear your opinions if you have more things I missing

In my opinion, I break down the main topics into two categories: bugs and features.

Bugs

  • Bugs that can break the save file (For Rent period)
    • This is the level that makes me stop playing the game for a few months.
    • Recently, I still avoided opening a "rental residential lot" for my safety.
  • Bugs about visuals and screenshots
    • Do you remember "pausing the game but the head still slowly turns?😂"  Sometimes it's too scary like the horror movie. And it's annoying when I want to save the screenshot but can't get exactly what I want.
    • Many years ago, I couldn't save screenshots in the basement because some visual bug.
    • This level of bugs didn't ruin the save, but it was quite a waste of time.

Feature

  • Hidden autonomous "romantic" interactions
    • I already disabled autonomy about romantic interaction but since Lovestruck, I found that my sims did "romantic introduction" autonomously. I don't sure if it happened in NPC before. Fortunately, there is a mod to disable this auto-introduction. I hope it works.
    • Before Lovestruck, there is a hidden "NPC introduction" that boosts the romantic bar to NPC too. (You can read more at ""No Random NPC Romance" mod by lazarusinashes")
    • I found this by combining university students into one household and found that some already have love without my notice.
    • I'm not too micro-management about townies, but I added the mod to disable this to avoid them ruining my OC's relationship autonomously.
  • Bodyshape changing over time
    • I almost stop playing the game because I can't control this. It was quite too late when I found that my muscular guy sim became slightly chubby after I took screenshots for one in-game year. Too late to redo several events again.
    • Fortunately, I hadn't visited San Myshuno Festival too often before I could find the mod to disable body shape changing (Roburky's Fitness Control), so the damage isn't too far to fix.

I'm not too micro-management player, but I hate when some new mechanics change the details of sims hiddenly. And it's even scarier if some bugs are like "the cancer" that secretly damage your game to the point that can't fix.

Sometimes (or many times), I spent more than 50% of my playtime "checking, fixing, and testing". I even thought that I would better stop playing to use time for something less stressful. But, sadly I still enjoy the rest of the game. 😅

Lastly, I know that each person has a different playstyle and level of uncontrollable acceptance. Some people like chaos thing which is not wrong. But I believe that many people are like me who want to play with enough control.

Or at least, want to play without worrying about the hidden "cancer" in the save file.

  • What issues? None. I've had 3 saves completely borked by updates, to the point where they were lost forever. But I don't take the game that seriously, so I just start a new save and move on.

Keep in mind that even if you lose a save, your favorite sims are still saved in your library; you can start over with them

Never mind about how many topics are in your reply. I understand that there are many things about it and I'm glad that you took the time to share it here.

I saw that you have many Sims and might play with big families. I'm not sure if you play aging-on or not. CC (Sims appearance mods) sometimes break the game, too, especially if it's too old (e.g., older than Seasons EP).

Removing the size of the save file by deleting unused lots and sims as you said would help too.

I also don't have only one main save file, I have 2 now. Actually, these are all of what I have lol. I don't want to edit townies every time so I keep staying in the main save and am concerned about the safety of the save file.

I like your playstyle that can move on and enjoy new things without worrying.

I don't know how your save and others' save can break because I haven't experienced this level of game break until now. I'm quite new compared to many people here, I start in 2021. So, I still think that just backing up a save file is enough.

But after reading your reply and previous replies, I found that I should back up "households/sims" as well. Because most of population in my game are generated townies that I edited in CAS later. They don't have a backup in the Gallery manually. They are all important to me, so backing up will help me be able to bring them to the new save when I "have to" move on.

Yeah, I had typed that post out in wordpad lol.

But yeah, for me, most of the sims I've made have a save in my library/gallery, like: "Straudred 1"for example. I'm still on the road to creating another save since the ones with the teens who finished highschool were a bit bloated by various flavors of self created sims who I hadnt really touched. Figured some of those were the biggest problem and got rid of some.

My Yopson save, I did a save as and new savefile for that as well as deleted some of the older "not in this world" households that were cluttering, hopefully, I should be able to play him without hangs soon. All the saves with my first vampire seem to be good...

I should mention I have roughly 3 to 10 saves depending on the particular version of back up, but I'm back to using the original latest version of saves which had managed to bloat to nearly 1gb in size before I started trimming away at the excess.

For me, it just appears right now as if the issues were mainly centered around over population on the household management system, because I typically dont bother putting the "exiled" groups of offspring or other sims, in houses. Glad I was able to provide some help or suggestions of where to look for issues.

Saving all your lots and sims in your personal gallery is valuable. You can rebuild worlds faster.

It's wise to have several back up saves.

Excuse me, I want to make sure: Did your save file's size reach 1GB? (I mean one save file, not a save folder). Because mine is 21MB for save file that has under 700 sims. But I didn't keep "photo items" in inventory because they are real culprit for the bloating file's size.

Photos are picture files but sims and lots (without mods) data are text. So, the impact is very different.

Your playstyle probably needs to split household members into different save files to make sure that you can keep everything properly. If you have more details about your managing methods that you want to share, feel free to share, it's good for me to learn!

I don't want to rebuild the save file very soon because I want to keep the relationship of my townies in the game (I love to see them introduce themselves and become friends without my control). But I will save backup all lots and sims in case TS4 update may break the save files someday. (San Myshuno case is almost the point where I'm scared)

I have a backup save every day (some days I have 2-3 if I played a lot) unless that day I did only minor CAS edits. It's useful when I want to recheck my progress when I update stories in Google sheet.

After seeing the big change if I install L&D, I plan to saving every lots and sims before let L&D be a part of my main file. I still want to learn this pack details (and impacts) from reviewing youtube and forums. So, I don't have to play soon. Safety first! 😂

San Myshuno is Freaked due to the updates supporting Life&Death. The most recent update killed the city again.

I'm investigating the situation this morning...

Please share it here if you know something more. Or you can post the link to the bug report too.

I love San Myshuno, so it's really bad for me.
