What Should Raj Rasoya's Eldest Son Major In? (closed)

Help! I can't decide what my academically aspiring sim should major in! He's gotten into basically all the distinguished degree programs, so that's no help. I've narrowed it down somewhat, but can't seem to make the final decision! Here's the relevant sim info:

Traits are Loves Outdoors, Music Lover, and Green Fiend. He's also earned the physically, creatively, and socially gifted traits, in that order. So far, he already likes fitness fishing, comedy and mischief. He doesn't like writing or programming. He's the son of Raj Rasoya, and actually got the food and drink scholarship, and his mother is an alumni of Brightchester and is in the politician career. And of course, his current aspiration is the Academic one from University Living. His highest skill right now is charisma, followed by cooking, painting, comedy, and guitar. He also already has some fitness, logic, and piano.

So. Here are the options I'm considering:

Culinary Arts is of course an option, carrying on that legacy, would give him the option of entering either his father or grandmother's career. Plus, he got the scholarship for food and drink, so that would make sense. He would go to Brightchester, following his mother's alumni, and probably join debate club because the academic aspiration requires high research and debate skill and he'll need to get that up somehow.

Keeping that in mind, focusing on a major that has more research and debate in the core curriculum might make more sense, in which case there's Economics, where he could enter the manager branch of the conservationist career, which would be cool for his green fiend trait.

On the other hand, there's also biology, which would let him focus on fitness, and also enter the other branch of the conservationist career. Both these options would mean attending Foxbury, which means he wouldn't get to join the debate guild.

And lastly, he is a music lover after all, and has decent painting skill, so Fine Arts at Brightchester could also be an option.

So, what do you guys think?

edit: well, it looks like biology and culinary are neck and neck--1 vote difference isn't really enough to make a clear call for me lol. But, at least you've all helped narrow it down to 2, which will still help me a bunch! Thanks everyone!

  • Well I would imagine them living somewhere in wilderness running a campsite or guiding travelers or such

and sometimes playing song or 2 by the campfire and cooking campsite specials

haha! Well, he's actually already completed the mansion baron aspiration, which was his first adult aspirtaion, but he got that one done as soon as he moved out of his parent's city apartment (it sure is nice to have parents with lots of money to give you lol). So, he's all set up to go to university while living in this beautiful, eco friendly, lushly landscaped mansion :D So, no living in the wilderness I don't think, just a keen appreciation for it, especially having grown up in the city.
  • I think I would go for Economics and he could possibly manage his own restaurant before later changing to a more conservation oriented career?
  • Loving the outdoors and being a green-fiend suggests to me that he'd do well (and probably be happy) as a conservation activist of either sort, but Biology would also give him a good start in the medical field, if he should ever wish to be a doctor. As for being a music lover, he can love music no matter what he does for a living. :)
  • I had the son of Raj Rasoya go into business because that suited his personality but he was ambitious and materialistic. Yours sounds like he might be a fit for biology. Mine moved to Umbrage Manor with his art critic wife and has a rebellious, indie/punk daughter and a nerdy son. No pets because he is too interested in keeping a spotless and formal place.

I'd do Culinary, because that's a huge advancement in career, and will help quickly accomplish the cooking-based aspiration which awards the Fresh Chef trait and, personally, that's one I like to have under my belt when playing families or large households.

But a lot depends on how you play, and what traits/careers/etc. are helpful in that regard. What do you forsee for this sim down the line?

Well, hopefully he'll meet someone and get married and have kids eventually, so Raj can complete his big happy family aspiration lol. Aside from that, I tend to play pretty loosely and just kinda go with the flow of things. I don't plan things out too much, and just kinda take cues from the randomness of the game. I don't know if he's going to have the cooking aspiration in the future, but he might I suppose. As I mentioned in another reply, he had the mansion baron aspiration first, which was completed when he moved in with his best friend (Rohan Elderberry's eldest, who also had the mansion baron aspiration) after aging up. They combined funds given to them by their successful parents to buy a big, eco friendly, green home in Willow Creek and are bachelor padding in up for now. Not sure how it'll go when one of them wants to start a family, but we'll see! I could see him going into cooking or conservation, but right now I'm focusing on just completing that academic aspiration lol.

I'd recommend he does Culinary Arts at Britchester. If he manages to graduate with honors, coupled with the fact that a culinary arts degree from Britchester is a distinguished degree, it will be a straight advancement to Level 8 of the Chef branch (Sous Chef). He'd be earning $131 / hr ($786 / day and $3,930 per week), which can also be a great help to offset the household bills coming in weekly (I'm assuming a lofty mansion comes with a heavy bill to pay). And take into consideration that if his job performance is good, he can go on to successfully negotiate for a bonus. It is an added incentive compared to if he did Economics, which - although relevant to the Conservationst career track, isn't a distinguished degree in Britchester, and will land him a Level 7 advancement at best if he manages to graduate with honors.

As far as the universities are concerned, go straight for Britchester over Foxbury if the Academic aspiration is a definite want. This means the biology option is definitely out.

Well, they would all be distinguished degrees. If he did economics or biology he'd just go to Foxbury. I don't think I said anything about having to go to Brightchester lol.

Also I'm not too worried about bills just yet, as he's got a full ride with scholarships to university to the point that I'm pretty sure he's gonna GET money when he enrolls, his roommate makes a fair amount with his painting, they have some reserves left over from what their parents gave them, they both have the frugal trait, and all the green energy devices on the lot have lowered bills a fair amount. So, my main concerns are 1: what's going to help complete the Academic aspiration, and 2: what fits for the character.
  • I'd have him major in Fine Arts, then go the Bob Ross route career-wise, painting outdoor landscapes and happy little trees.

Well, okay - any major is going to help him complete the Academic aspiration. The final feather in the cap comes about if he could use his degree to land him a relevant job. Making him join the Debate Guild in Britchester could potentially expedite the process of raising his research and debate skill so I guess it all boils down to whether or not that's what you want to do.

"What fits for the character" really isn't up to us to say. With these stated traits and skillset anybody can argue their points about what they think is best for him. Ultimately, it's your gameplay so you get to decide which career track he chooses to embark on. We can only pitch ideas as to how he can potentially benefit.

Yes, I mentioned in the original post about the debate guild at Brightchester, but majoring in economics would also help get Research and Debate up. That was kind part of the question--debate guild at Brightchester, or Economics at Foxbury? Doing Biology at Foxbury would be the hardest in terms of completing the aspiration, but might fit the character perhaps, cause of liking fitness and being physically talented from childhood, plus both that and Economics lead to the Conservationist career, which seems like something he'd be interested in. But, on the other hand, Culinary is appealing because he got the Food and Drink scholarship and would be following his family legacy, so majoring in that makes sense storywise as well. That's basically the debate I've been having with myself--while some are a bit easier in terms of the aspiration, each one has its appeal in terms of story and character, and I'm having trouble deciding as I like them all to some degree.

I explained all this initially in the first post, but I'm restating as there seems to be some confusion. Making money is pretty easy in the game, so that's never a concern for me, and I was mostly just taking a poll for the fun of it, as I'm equally interested in all the potential paths. If I had one I thought clearly fit the character more than the others, I wouldn't have asked anyone else in the first place. But as it is, it's all more or less equal to me--even if some will be a bit more "hard mode" in terms of the aspiration (as I said, Biology at Foxbury would probably be the hardest in terms of the aspiration, for instance), I'm prepared to do that, cause I don't mind a challenge and I've completed this aspiration a couple times already--and so I thought it'd be fun to ask what other people thought made sense for the character, since I think they ALL fit pretty well. I didn't list any thought didn't fit the character--they're all reflective of different aspects of his personality and story, as I outlined in my initial description.

I'm not really sure what you mean by "feather in the cap for a relevant job". All the degrees lead to careers, all the careers can be "relevant"--culinary, conservationist, and musician all make sense for him as a person. And all the careers can make money, so again, I'm not really sure what difference it makes in terms of that. What fits the character IS up to you to say, because I've given you the options of things that all fit the character. There are no bad story options presented, and I like all of them. I asked because I thought it'd be fun to have other people decide, because I enjoy a certain element of randomness challenge in my games in places. If there was a clear "right" answer, I wouldn't have asked anyone else. I was just asking people to pick their personal favorite for the character from a list of options that are pretty much equally appealing.
