It's important to remember that what people like about The Sims (in any form) differs from person to person. Some *only* like to build. Others *only* like to make custom content. Still others only like to play. And the way that they play has a myriad of ways.
For example, I didn't like running either a retail store or a resort/hotel. I like to do skill building and have multigenerational families that live happy lives (and I sometimes like to build). But I know that that is *not* what others like in the game and even if they like the ideas I've mentioned, when you look at how they actually *do* play, it's different from the way *I* play.
But that's the joy of The Sims. It *can* be played in many different ways.
But that's also a limitation because the development team can't make everyone happy. For example, some people preferred the way bills were done prior to Eco Lifestyle. Others like it better now. Or they liked it the "cheap" way it was done before the most recent update. But that's where the modders come in. They can make mods so that people can have it the way that they like it even if the majority prefer it a different way (or because the developers *thought* that people would prefer it a different way.)
