Personally, I used a fan of adjusting the lifespan as needed. For example, my sims usually end up being vampires but when I needed/wanted the sim world to change a little faster I'd switch to short lifespan. However, I'd change it to long/normal depending on what the situation called for. After a couple playthroughs that felt a little like cheating so I'm trying out a simple long lifespan and seeing if I can do it without getting too bored.
