I don't usually use the name generator, except when it's for a family I don't care much about. There's usually a theme in my families, although they are not always very obvious. One of the first themes I had was names containing the letter "x". So I had two brothers called Felix and Rex and decided to give them a sister named Fox. One of them had a daughter called Trixie and another had a son called Alexi. I think there was a Calyx too.
Sometimes the names can be mildy punny like the resident black widow called Pandora Cruz (oh sir, you don't want to open that box! ) Other times, siblings will have names that start with the same letter or they'll have the same ending instead, for example Seraphine, Angeline, Celestine etc. Members of the Mafia usually get an Italian name. Themes might be nature, astronomy, mythology or whatever else comes to mind for some reason.
One time I did sort of make up some names, was with the children of a nature-loving, vegetarian couple who live in a treehouse. They conceived twins (no cheats) while on a jungle adventure, a girl and boy, so I called them Selva and Dorado as an homage. They seemed like the hippy type to do something like that.
As for where I find them, sometimes it's names I already know and like, other times I'll use a website like behindthename or nameberry. I tend to go for unusual ones, although regular names are fine.
One I did today was for a tester sim I made called Tess Tester. She solely exists to play test my builds before I upload them to the gallery, although it just occurred to me that some things are better tested in pairs, so perhaps I should give her a husband and call him Bob Builder
