Why are all the students overweight?
I would say 98% of my NPC uni roommates are really overweight. Is this by design or a bug? I don’t mind a chunky sim, I’m not a stick insect myself but it’s everybody! I’m playing with no cc/mods.

If they did not do it, then they would starve if you would not place down a fridge. I think they bring a lot of food to prevent them from starving, it's probably a tuning file where they are told to bring food regularly, and the developers probably set it to pretty high to prevent them from starving and also make the dorm seem more dirty. It's probably the same script from Island Living or maybe even a second script on top of that. So that's why they bring so much food.
As for the food choices, I think it's the developers trying to be funny.
