I get that you want to emulate the social habits of society today, but even the mess we have in real life isn't as dysfunctional as what we have in the game. Why can't sims browse, and initiate and grow the purchase bar on their own instead of my having to babysit and interact with them every single step to purchase.
And even worse; I feel like the developers really aren't listening or don't care about this issue.
Try interrupting those socializing by asking a few of them about their preferences and the cost of things. That gets their mind off socializing and maybe half interested in looking at something. I have done this a few times to break up group talks.
