Why do we have positive - negative threads?

I've been curious for a while how the idea of the "positive" and "negative" threads for various packs started and why we feel the need to separate the two rather than having one "discuss the pack"- thread instead.

My observations of the various threads are that the positive thread generally holds much more information about the pack in the opening post and is updated with new information, while the negative thread usually start with a very short post that stays the same. I've also noticed people stopping themselves in discussions of the pack going "I also have something... to say but I'll put that in the other thread".

Is it that we're so used to filter bubbles that we have a hard time dealing with a thread that contains both bad and good? Or that we just want to be able to whine/gush over a pack in peace without someone trying to "convert" us? Or are we worried of offending those of another opinion than our own?  I'm asking because I'm generally curious as to how and why this tradition was started and why we keep it up.

  • I like to share and discuss the game with simmers who are looking forward to the pack. It's as simple as that. I've also said that constructive feedback is more than welcome in the Positive Thoughts thread. What's important is not what you say but how you say it. Some of the pack discussion threads got pretty heated back in the day, requiring moderator intervention.

You may want to take a look at this thread where Ea_Cade also weighs in.

Why do we have Negative thread for a pack that is not yet released? | EA Forums - 1485280

Sorry if the posts are missing in the above thread. They were there when I linked it. Most simmers were approving of the separate threads.

Anyway, one of the reasons Cade approved of the separate threads is because the Negative thread is especially helpful to the developers in determining what simmers were expecting, or wanted, instead of having to scroll through a huge pack thread for critical feedback.

The Positive Thoughts thread started in 2020, with the announcement of Journey to Batuu. I think we can all agree that was a polarizing pack.
