Not only that, but it also almost always is the centerpiece item (the one item that most agree is the one that's holding all the other pieces together). Is it some kind of requisite to have at least one deadly aspect when creating a pack?
I think it all started with Sims 1 and the fires. The creator of the Sims lost his own house because of a fire. He recreated that in the Sims (which I think is the reason why the fires are so often in the first Sims game). The players loved that aspect, along side with the pool and ladders thing. So I think from that moment the players were interesting in new ways to kill your sims and that has never changed.
I don't know if my story is 100% true, but this is atleast what I think :)
