So I think it's realistic that sims bathing in pools or rivers raises their overall hygiene somewhat, albeit not as quickly or effectively as a proper shower, especially when washing hands and brushing teeth are presented as achieving the same goal despite being limited to only one small part of the body.
Ok I understand coarse dirt, although I always feel and smell unclean after a swim in real life and shower afterward, which is why I think it makes sense for the sim. I guess it could also be situational. If your sim is exeptionally dirty then a dip in the pool could increase hygiene, but if your sim is already clean a swim would decrease it.
