I put the EA app into offline mode and launched the game that way. Then I went back online with the game still running. This could also be a work around if offline mode doesn't give you issues.

We are tracking this issue internally and working to get it resolved ASAP, The Sims 4 does not require EA Play in any form to function.
I'll post updates as I get them in this thread.
Update: @ Ace_C1 has shared a potential solution for this issue until the issue is resolved:
I also found a work around for anyone else experiencing this problem but had the game installed beforehand. Navigating to the game's directory and going under /game/bin and opening it manually though the .exe opens the game without issue. Interestingly the EA app would close/crash the moment the workaround is performed and refuse to open until the Sims 4 is closed.
