Just like other careers like being a chef, it's really boring to watch your sim just stand around and have that as an "active" job. What makes an active job good is the moving around and doing big physical stuff. Pointing and yelling at sims, clicking on a stove or washing machine is not gameplay.
They could do so much more with directing. Coordinating fight scenes, love scenes, writing out scenes, budgeting, firing and hiring actors and actresses, going to award ceremonies, filming, etc. Pointing and yelling at Sims is gameplay. Anything that's done in game, is gameplay. It may be boring (like Laundry Day) but it's still gameplay and more is better than less. And if push comes to shove it doesn't even have to be an active career.
What you're describing is closer to how it is with owning a restaurant, which is one of the weaker features in the series, being too micromanagey. Also, how would you incorporate skill or performance into this? If you really want to cast a particular sim, and the game tells you it's wrong, is the game right, or should you be able to do what you want? It's all good as a concept, but it's displaying it that's the tricky part.
