I never understood why people cared about the backstory of the Sims in their game when most of the time, no one cares enough to look enough at it for more than two seconds. Because, without mods, the Sims do not have children, they all die out if you have ageing on, so all that backstory is nothing more than wasted space and time.
“They have no skills! They have no relationships! They have no grandparents!”
Does any of this matter when within ten seconds of the game starting, character X, who supposedly hates character Y, is flirting with them as if they were long time lovers and had never fought a day in their life?
Until the game does what MCCC does in regards to the story, there is no point making in-depth backstories. As a writer myself, keeping things simple in a sandbox environment is the perfect option as it allows for the player to change it how they want.
If you want them to have these things, cheat it in. You can easily max their skills, relationships, and put them into any career that they may belong to.
None of these are sandbox videogames, though. They are books, which are based around characters, backstory, and intrigue to captivate the reader. There is a massive difference between a simulation/sandbox game than a book. They two cannot be compared, no matter how much you squint and try and draw comparisons.

It's a lot of work but to be fair, if I was employed on the TS4 team, this is something I'd be advocating for and would expect to be working on. Lore is surely the most important thing when creating worlds. Just look at LOTR, GoT, Vampire Chronicles, and other successful "story worlds", the lore is thick and consistent.
