In the meantime- I've found that putting something solid in front of the mouse hole stops the mouse from coming out- at least it worked for one of the holes in my apartment-lol. I live in a really nice area and every time they build a house around here or work on the drains we get mice in the garage- so it is kinda realistic and fun. As far as everything else like bug and breakage- that's pretty real too, although I still think you should have the option to change it at will.
This seems to be working in the living room with the sofa in front of the hole. About to try it in the master bedroom because the disgusting little (fill in not so nice term here) just came out the hole. :/

I've only seen roaches once and that was in the corner/outside wall where I put the fireplace.
