Winning a Professional Computer Games Tournament?

My sim has mastered gaming skill. But when I enter the professional tournament. My sim comes in either 3rd or 2nd place. What do I need to do. In order for my sim to successfully come in 1st place...

I had one sim used to win all the time. The family actually got rich that way! But my most recent Sims to attempt it suffers losses a lot. I wonder if it is random. I tried all the same stuff second time round but with little joy.
