There have been quite a few over the past year actually, only the ones who left recently have been so publicized. And apparently there are quite a few missing employees than I thought looking at these job postings, which should be a little worrisome.
Some of those could be people who were in house who transferred to other positions -- or were promoted upwards. It doesn't mean that they actually left the company. Other vacancies might have been for retirements or simply departures for other companies, either to lessen a commute or to get better pay/benefits. Every company has a certain percentage of turnover in a year; people even leave Google if their spouse/partner gets a better job offer in another part of the country.
