If you take a Sim to a community lot and enter Build/Buy mode, the inventory isn't available (you can't open it), so I don't think your idea would work. Nice thought though. Because most of the items have the emotional auras that you can activate (the crystals have energy, the photos focused, the MySims playful) it's better to have a few scattered around various rooms anyway.
