It takes like 4 game hours to make a potion. Now my Sim has copy paste but most potions given by the sages to my Sim turn to ashes. My Sim will have to make them and then copy. My Sim is level 4. Magic is not fun ... my Sim got a bored mood after doing magic. I hate seeing ordinary Sims in the realm. The one Sim that I would love to see, Bella Goth is a no show. My Sim can't duel with the townies that visit the Realm even though I can see them doing magic.
I can see how magic could make life easier for my Sim but not sure I will keep playing this Sim or save with many spell casters.
If you're not opposed to using mods then there is one available on mod the sims that makes magic fun. Just google Sims 4 magic is fun mod. I'm using it in my game and it works quite nice. I can't for the life of me understand why magic isn't a fun activity by default. It seems like such an odd design choice.
