HELP: Cannot start because the below file appears to be corrupted.

I am about to lose my mind. I abandoned The Sims 4 for about a year because I came across this issue.

"Cannot start because the below file appears to be corrupted. If this file is a Mod please remove it and try again. If not, please repair or reinstall the game via Origin."

What happened before:
I re-downloaded my Mods and Custom Contents after deleting them for storage last year because I was going to school and needed space for academics. My process of downloading is: I download ten Mods/CCs then enter the game to test the mods. I had issues with Mods before so I became paranoid when downloading new CCs because they may break my game, but even old CCs could be outdated. I had no issues for a while until I finished downloading all the female and male hair CCs when I suddenly got the pop-up. A bunch of files were corrupted; after removing the Mod the pop-up told me to remove it and try again, and another error popped up with another corrupted Mod. I remember all of the hair CCs I downloaded from JoshSeo's were corrupted, so I had to delete all of them because I thought it had something to do with their CCs. Until I got a pop-up after another pop-up with different CCs from different creators.

Eventually, I got frustrated and just deleted all my Mods.

What happened now:

Three days ago, I started re-downloading my Mods and CCs. I really want to play. In fact, I already started playing. I have a lot of CCs, but I downloaded only about 13% of my CCs. It's already a lot, but not exactly half of what I had. I was hoping I wouldn't come across the same issue I had months ago, and to my disappointment, I did anyway.

Again, the issue popped up when I finished downloading all my hair CCs for females.

But... I am so confused because the "corrupted mods" worked perfectly fine until I downloaded a few more, and all of a sudden, everything seems to be corrupted now? Huh?

The file I attached is one of the screenshots of the pop-up error I am receiving. The corrupted package file is SYB_Millennial_Hanging_plant_V3.package. This CC worked PERFECTLY FINE before I downloaded the last few hair CCs and the game just won't open anymore. I don't know if the last CCs I downloaded are the cause of this error.

I have:
✓ Repaired the game multiple times.

✓ Removed localthumbcache.
✓ Reinstalled the game.
✓ Removed the Mods and opened the game. The game worked without all of my Mods, of course. I placed the Mods back and I got the pop-up again.

✓ The EA App, not Origin.

My Mac:

Macbook Pro, M1, 2020

I would be grateful for clear, straightforward explanations as I’m not very familiar with how this site works. I don’t mean to sound ignorant, I just find this site a bit confusing since I don’t use it often.

I might reply slow.

I hope we can solve this. I just want to play the game. Thank you.

  • @EerieEchoes Please try these steps in exactly this order, even if you've done some of them before:

    1. Drag your whole Sims 4 folder from Document > Electronic Arts to your desktop or rename the folder
    2. Run a Game Repair through the EA App
    3. Launch Sims 4.

If that works, please redownload a fresh copy of one of the problem files and install it in the new Mods folder to test. If that works, you can step through other files gradually.

Hi! I actually deleted my original post, but somehow it’s still showing up, haha.

I ended up finding the solution the next day, that's why I deleted the post. No one also replied at the time. It turns out my issue was caused by editing The Sims 4 files while Origin/EA was still running in the background—basically, I was adding and removing Mods with the App open. This was causing file corruption, even though I initially thought the issue might be with specific mods. I researched if any creators I downloaded from had corrupted files, but I couldn’t find any related issues, so I was really confused.

Eventually, I figured it out by testing things on my own. I moved my entire Sims 4 folder out and started a new save, then gradually re-added my data. Everything worked fine until I reintroduced a specific folder from my Mods that seemed to contain the corrupted file. I deleted that folder, re-downloaded the mods with the EA App fully closed, and everything worked perfectly. Looks like that was the root of the issue! I later found a post where someone mentioned the same thing.
