    Yes, but all the characters that do this--three so far--are NPCs and I'm guessing they're off to work like everyone here suggested.

This happens in my game as well only it's not my sim that disappears... it's the sim that invited my sim. Why would they ask me somewhere if they are meant to be working or otherwise busy?
